Have you ever hurt your shoulder playing pickleball or rolled your ankle while running? If you want care soon after your injury, UPMC has a convenient option for you.

A walk-in orthopaedic injury clinic is now available on weeknights at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry Township. Simply walk in between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Monday through Friday to be seen that evening by an orthopaedic or sports medicine physician.

Patients who visit the walk-in clinic will be seen same day by a provider who specializes in diagnosing and treating orthopaedic injuries. Many of our physicians also specialize in sports medicine, so if you got your injury from a sport or activity, they know how to get you back out there.

“We see community members ages 10 and up who have acute musculoskeletal injuries, be it from sports or from putting up holiday decorations. Accidents happen, and we’re here to help,” said Jeanne Doperak, DO, a primary care sports medicine physician with UPMC Sports Medicine who serves as one of the walk-in clinic physicians.

The clinic is specifically designed to address acute, non-life-threatening orthopaedic injuries. Our team provides exceptional care to patients 10 and up for:

  • Sports-related injuries.

  • Bone, joint, tendon, and muscle injuries.

  • Acute back and/or neck pain.

  • Broken bones.

  • Other orthopaedic concerns.

While we can provide on-demand care for many musculoskeletal injuries, there are some injuries, conditions, and requests we cannot treat or fulfill at the walk-in clinic. If you need any of the following, please follow up with your current care provider or schedule an appointment with one of our providers:

  • Concussion.

  • Second opinion.

  • Chronic injuries and/or ongoing pain.

  • Medication refills.

  • Sports, school, or work clearances.

  • Podiatry or wound care.

  • Follow-ups.

“In the last four months or so that the walk-in clinic has been open, we’ve seen many different injuries and have been fortunate to help many people get back on their feet,” said Dr. Doperak. “I’ve specifically seen a fair number of contusions or bad bruises, fractures, ligament issues like ACL tears, and knee and ankle sprains. I’ve also seen a few Achilles tendon injuries.”

What to Expect When You Stop By

When you make your way into the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex through the UPMC entrance, you’ll speak with the clinic front desk staff about your injury and what you’re looking to get care for that evening. There will also be a detailed list available of what the physicians can and cannot assist you with at the walk-in clinic.

Should you happen to attend for a reason the walk-in clinic cannot see, such as a chronic condition, the front desk staff may be able to help you schedule an appointment on another day with one of our providers. Or if you already have a provider you’re seeing for that condition, they may suggest you follow up with that provider.

If you attend the walk-in clinic for an acute injury that we can help with, staff will direct you to a waiting room before you see the provider.

“I really want to emphasize that the walk-in clinic accepts patients on a first come, first served basis, so wait times depend on how busy the clinic is that evening,” said Dr. Doperak. “There are instances where you can get in right away if it’s a light night. Or if it’s too busy and you don’t wish to wait, another night may be an option since we are conveniently open each weeknight.”

“Once you’re taken back to the clinic from the waiting room, you can expect to receive appropriate imaging, get an evaluation by an orthopaedic physician, and leave with a plan of care. Every plan of care is individualized to the person being treated.”

The convenience of seeing an expert on a weeknight can expedite the remainder of your care. The provider will evaluate your condition, and they can do an x-ray on the spot if needed to diagnose your injury. You will likely leave your walk-in appointment with one of the following:

  • Order for an MRI or other imaging to more precisely diagnose your injury.

  • Nonsurgical treatment plan, which may consist of rest, medications, injections, etc.

  • Recommendation to follow-up with UPMC Rehabilitation Institute for physical therapy, which can take place at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex or another one of their 60+ locations nearest to you.

  • Follow-up appointment to see a primary care sports medicine physician for further evaluation or to see an orthopaedic surgeon for surgical evaluation.

Regardless of your plan of care, your care team will collaborate to make a seamless transition from one provider to the next. Primary care sports medicine physicians, orthopaedic surgeons, and physical therapists work together throughout your individualized care plan.

What Stands Out About the Walk-in Clinic?

The walk-in orthopaedic injury clinic is a destination for Cranberry Township and the surrounding communities. It’s the only local evening clinic of its kind.

  1. Enjoy a convenient location and hours: We’re in the heart of Cranberry Township, open weeknights from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

  2. Start your care journey sooner: Hurt yourself? You don’t have to wait for an appointment during regular office hours.

  3. See a physician who specializes in orthopaedics and/or sports medicine: Physicians can reduce fractures, cast broken bones, administer injections, and more right at the walk-in clinic. They specialize in your type of injury. Some treatments will still require follow-up.

  4. Get treatment on the spot or a care plan with appropriate follow-up: The provider will evaluate you, hear your concerns, and equip you with the tools needed to recover in the way that works best for you.

  5. Receive an individualized plan and connections to other care providers: After diagnosis and potential initial treatment at the walk-in clinic, the physician can refer you to a specialist. For example, if you came in with a hand injury, they can help you schedule a follow-up with a hand specialist.

“What’s really special about this clinic is our ability to provide comprehensive, complete care on the spot due to the specialty, experience, and education of the providers,” Dr. Doperak said. “With a high-quality first appointment, it creates one less step for our patients so they can get back to what they want to do sooner.”
