FCAS Marching Band Places First at Norwin Pimba Competition
The Fox Chapel Area High School Marching Band won first place in the Class AA division at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Marching Band Association (PIMBA) competition held September 23, 2023, at Norwin High School. Additionally, the band also received the highest scores in both Visual and General Effect. The theme of this year’s show is “Cosmos.” The band is under the student direction of drum majors senior Chloe Kim and junior Luca Zgurzynski, and band directors/teachers Daryl Lesnik and Evan Hertrick.
Edgeworth Bridge Club Celebrates 90th Anniversary
The Edgeworth Bridge Club (EBC) will be celebrating its 90th Anniversary on Wednesday, November 15 at 11 a.m. at the Edgeworth Club in Sewickley. At the luncheon, they will be unveiling silver trays engraved with names of club winners dating back to 1933. If you learned to play bridge years ago but haven’t played recently or would like to improve your game, The Edgeworth Bridge Club offers free lessons though a Lunch and Learn series. The lessons have included Introduction to Duplicate Bridge, Completing a Convention Card, Responding to Partner’s Takeout Double, Responding to Partner’s Preemptive Opening and the Many Face of Stayman. Beginner Bridge lessons are being planned for early 2024. The bridge games at the Edgeworth Club are held every Wednesday at 12:15 p.m.
Sealarks November Meeting
Sealarks Women’s Group will meet at 1 p.m. on November 8th at Memorial Park Church. The program is ”Pittsburgh makes Merry-Guilded Age Holiday Traditions” by Sue Morris. The group provides Christian fellowship and social activity for women alone. All women are welcome to attend and consider joining. The meeting is free for members and $2 for guests. Three Rivers Film Festival To Showcase Indie Feature Films
The Three Rivers Film Festival will run November 8th-15th. This year’s festival will showcase 22 exciting and thought-provoking indie feature films including dramas, comedies, and documentaries. La Roche University Recognizes 2023 Distinguished Alumni
La Roche University recently presented seven outstanding graduates with Distinguished Alumni Awards at a ceremony during Homecoming Weekend. La Roche grants the Distinguished Alumni Award to graduates whose outstanding success at work and in the community reflects the mission of the University. The 2023 Distinguished Alumni Awardees are: Lori Arend ’04, M.A., LSW (Posthumously), Tracie Brady ’91, DBA, Jason Haberman ’13, M.S., Kara Dragone Haque ’09, DMD, Holly Hippensteel ’94, Ph.D., Jessica Huber ’06, ’08, Ph.D., MSN, RN, CCRN, CPN and Sarah Sakaluk ’07, ’09, RN, MSN.
Seventeen Aquinas Academy of Pittsburgh Students Earn 2023 AP Scholar Awards
Seventeen of Aquinas Academy of Pittsburgh’s current students and graduates of the Class of 2023 earned AP Scholar Awards for their achievements on AP Exams during their high school years. Ten of the awardees are alumni of the Class of 2023. An additional six students are seniors of the Class of 2024 and one is in eleventh grade. The awardees achieved one of three levels: AP Scholar, AP Scholar with Honor, and AP Scholar with Distinction. The AP Scholar award was earned by Clara Yuo (2025), Seraphina Myron (2024), Alexandra Taylor (2024), Nicole Jerich (2023), and Thomas Quinn (2023). The AP Scholar award is “granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams.” AP Scholar with Honor was awarded to Anne Austin (2024), Chase Harrison (2024), Joshua Schlemmer (2024), Samuel Buchanan (2023), Liam Ellis (2023), and Julia Meland (2023). The AP Scholar with Honor award is “granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.” AP Scholar with Distinction was awarded to Benjamin Everson (2024), Maryam Bou Samra (2023), Cecilia Burchill (2023), JohnPaul Calvino (2023), Benjamin Tarquinio (2023), and Sarah White (2023). The AP Scholar with Distinction award is “granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.”
